Renal medicine is advancing rapidly. Fortunately we have managed to keep pace with this and deliver the best to our patients. However, this progress is not uniform and is concentrated in the major cities. Even the basic renal services are not available to most of our population. We have tried to highlight this.

Most of our colleagues from other specialities are completely ignorant about the basics of dialysis and transplantation. This is probably because renal medicine is a relatively young science particularly so in India. In this issue we have made an attempt to introduce the very basics of dialysis and transplantation to our readers.

In our country, cadaver transplantation programme has just begun and is making good progress, albeit very slowly. For this programme to succeed, we need the participation of not only the intensivists, neurosurgeons and neurophysicians but the entire medical community. Hence emphasis has been laid on this subject.

We thank Dr. OP Kapoor, Dr. RJ Mehta and his team for inviting us to edit this special issue on dialysis and kidney transplantation. We hope that this issue generates adequate awareness about the basics of dialysis and transplantation.
