This issue of Bombay Hospital Journal is dedicated to Dr. BK Goyal whose name has become synonymous with Cardiology in our country. He is teacher of teachers and his name has become household in the field of heart diseases.

Dr. BK Goyal is an internationally acclaimed cardiologist and medical educationist. Dr. Goyal is the only cardiologist outside the United States to have the unique distinction of being appointed as the Hon. Consultant Cardiologist to the world famous Texas Heart Institute at Houston, USA.

Dr. Goyal is the Hony. dean and chief cardiologist at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences and is a former Director-Professor of cardiology of JJ Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, Bombay.

He is a visiting professor of cardiology at the University of Alabama, in USA and visiting cardiologist to the Oschner Heart Institute, New Orleans. The State Government also honoured him by appointing him as the Professor Emeritus of Cardiology at the Grant Medical College for life. He served as a member of the Executive Council and Senate of the University of Bombay for several years. He is a member of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India and also the Medical Council of India.

Dr. Goyal is one of the pioneers in the field of cardiology and has contributed immensely to the development of this speciality. He is very actively involved in the field of interventional cardiology and has also been a crusader in the field of prevention of heart diseases.

He has played a very important role in the establishment of Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, the first non-government post graduate medical institute in our country imparting high standard medical education in various specialities and super-specialities.

He was the youngest president of Cardiological Society of India in 1974 and Association of Physicians of India in 1977.

Dr. Goyal is the founder President of Indian College of Interventional Cardiology. He was the chairman of 38th Annual Conference of National Academy of Medical Sciences, held in March, 1999 and will preside over the 1st World Congress of Interventional Cardiology to be held in October, 1999.

Last year he was invited to be on the Guest Faculty at the International Conference on Interventional Cardiology at Madrid, Spain. He also had the distinction of being invited to deliver Guest lecture by University of Rouen, France, in September, 1998 and was also on teaching faculty for International Seminar on Interventional Cardiology.

He is a pioneer in the field of pre-hospital coronary care and intensive coronary care in our country and was responsible for establishment of the first intensive care unit and mobile coronary care unit at Bombay Hospital.

He has been connected with the Indian Council of Medical Research, WHO and the Union Public Service Commission.

In recognition of the public service rendered by him, he was appointed as the Sheriff of Bombay in 1980 and was conferred "Padma Shri" in 1984 and "Padma Bhushan" in 1990.

He is the founder President of Dhanvantari Foundation, the Janata Janardan Health Organisation which is assisting the needy patients, Gen KM Kariappa Ex-servicemen Trust and several other social, cultural and educational organisations.

He has contributed immensely to various areas of Medical Profession and in view of his deep commitment in the area of public health, he was appointed as the chairman of a high power committee for upgrading medical facilities in rural and peripheral areas of the state by the Govt of Maharashtra in 1993. He is rendering yeoman services as the National Vice-chairman of Red Cross Society of India.
