WHY OFF AND ON ESR REPORTIS NORMAL WHEN YOU EXPECT IT TO BE HIGH?

O P Kapoor

Ex-Hon. Physician, Jaslok Hospital and Bombay Hospital, Mumbai, Ex. Hon. Prof. of Medicine, Grant Medical College and JJ Hospital, Mumbai 400 008.

In private practice we often find that off and on the ESR is reported as normal when one expects a high reading in a straight forward patient of active disease. Often this report comes from a big laboratory.

One of the reasons for this is that the blood which is collected from the patient is examined after couple of hours because of the excess work load in the laboratory.

It is worthwhile to send some of these patients for a fresh report of ESR with a note saying that kindly collect the blood sample and examine it immediately.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I am grateful to Dr. Sushil Shah for sharing his experiences.
