Principles and Practice of Obstetrics, Author : Vatsala Padubidri Publisher : Oxford University Press.

In the present context of "Safe Motherhood" and childcare, this book should enable obstetricians and general practitioners in maintaining the health of the pregnant woman, delivering a healthy baby, and making pregnancy and childbirth a joyful and satisfying experience. It addresses, in detail, antenatal supervision throughout pregnancy and detection of high risk and complicated pregnancies in order to provide optimal care to a woman during pregnancy and childbirth. This exceptionally practical textbook offers a sound, step-by-step approach to the diagnosis and management of major diseases and complications of the pregnant woman, the foetus, and the newborn. The textbook is organized chronologically into eight chapters - from diagnosis of pregnancy and prenatal care through labour and delivery to the postpartum period. Chapters on foetus and infant provide insight into foetal growth and abnormalities, and management of the neonate which is very important in maintaining the good health of the baby. Over the years, while teaching the students of obstetrics, my colleagues, and I share the view of an absolute dearth of a single comprehensive text-book of obstetrics worth mentioning to prescribe to the students. Moreover, of the textbooks currently available, most have been written with an orientation for the developed countries. The present book attempts to supply the students a comparatively easy technique of obstetrics, the aim being to emphasize the simplicities rather than complexities. The book is written in a clear and concise language and in the authorís own style which holds the readerís interest. Controversies are avoided and the management of the obstetrical problems being highlighted with the facilities available to most of the developing countries. Extensive illustrations have been used as and where needed to add lucidity and clarity to the subject and to emphasize the practical nature of the book. This book is written for undergraduate students of medicine, students of ayurveda studying obstetrics, postgraduate and diploma students of obstetrics, and general practitioners.
